Auckland Zoo and Mount Eden

Saturday, The 14th day of our Down Under to Eastern Delight trip

How could we come to New Zealand and miss seeing its national bird—the kiwi?

Waiheke Island and another relative

Friday, The 13th day of our Down Under to Eastern Delight trip

This morning, the sun was out again. Yesterday, we bought our ferry and hop-on-hop-off bus combo tickets in advance for Waiheke Island (pronounced WHY-heck-ee). Located in the Hauraki Gulf, Waiheke is known for its vineyards, beaches, and relaxed holiday vibe. It takes about 45 minutes by ferry from downtown Auckland.

Harbor Walk and the Sky Deck

Thursday, The 12th day of our Down Under to Eastern Delight trip

In the morning, we woke to find a few rays of sunlight streaming through the window. We hadn’t managed to unpack our things yesterday, so the morning was spent tidying up.

Going to Auckland

Wednesday, The 11th day of our Down Under to Eastern Delight trip

Today marked another chapter in our journey. Our noon flight took us to Auckland, New Zealand. Before boarding, I spent some time at the airport handling a bit of work, and by the time we landed, it was already 5:30 p.m.

From the Gallery to the Shrine

Tuesday, The 10th day of our Down Under to Eastern Delight trip

We woke up this morning to find it raining again — looks like we will be served another cold, wet day. I had to take care of some work emails and spent an hour on a call with a colleague discussing things.

Books, Lunch, the Skydeck and Rain

Monday, The 9th day of our Down Under to Eastern Delight trip

At 7:30 in the morning, Lune Croissanterie opened right on time. This bakery, long praised by countless YouTubers, is something of an online sensation. I thought arriving early would mean fewer people, but to my surprise, a long line had already formed outside when I arrived.

Walking in Melbourne

Sunday

The photo above would have been so much fun, right? That was our original plan for today. Unfortunately, it was raining again in the morning, even though we had already bought tickets back home for the Puffing Billy steam train — an old-fashioned train that runs through forested valleys and is often said to be one of the must-do experiences in Melbourne.

A Rainy Day

Saturday

It was still raining outside when we woke up this morning and the forecast said it would rain all day. I sipped my tea while glancing through over thirty emails in my work inbox and ended up replying to three of them. I am supposed to be on vacation!

Arriving in Melbourne

Friday

Today we set off for Melbourne.
At 7:30 in the morning, we drove to the airport, but returning the car turned out to be a bit of an ordeal — we circled several times before finding the right place and decided not to bother finding a gas station. When we finally handed it over, we were charged an extra 28 AUD for not refueling the tank 😂

The Last Day in Sydney

Thursday

Today was an easy, relaxing day. In the morning, I caught up on writing the travel blog from the past two days while we did the laundry. The sun was shining, and it was quiet outside.

Featherdale Sydney Wildlife Park & The Blue Mountains

Wednesday

We left early today which explains why we didn’t make our post yesterday!

Australian Animals

Tuesday

In the morning, we visited Sydney’s Taronga Zoo. The zoo sits on the hillside of Mosman, on the north shore of Sydney Harbour, offering a magnificent view. From Circular Quay, it takes less than twenty minutes by ferry to get there. The short voyage itself feels like a prelude — sea breeze brushing by, sunlight dancing on the waves, the Opera House and Harbour Bridge gradually receding into the background, while the zoo nestles amid lush greenery.

Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House

Monday

The light rail station is 5 minutes from the Airbnb.

In the morning, we left our Airbnb and took the light rail a few stops to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The weather, at the turn of spring and summer, was still a bit cool, and the sun hid behind the clouds. It took about half hour to walk across the bridge. There weren’t many people—just a few joggers, cyclists, and locals strolling with coffee cups in hand, all looking quite content.

Epic Trek to Sydney

10/31/2025-11/2/2025

We departed from Alex’s place around 4 p.m. in Los Angeles and arrived at LAX around 5:30 p.m. We headed to the lounge, where we enjoyed complimentary drinks, snacks, wine, and a steak dinner.

Heading to Sydney!

It’s Halloween, which means we’re going Down Under! We got up bright and early this morning, a little concerned that the government shutdown would cause delays at the airport. Well, in fact there were no issues at all, so we had an extra hour at the airport to wait before our first short flight to Irvine!

Heading Down Under on Halloween!

We’ve booked the major international segments and have begun adding hotels and Airbnbs! We will leave from SFO on Halloween and fly to Orange County where we spend the day with Jeanne (and Alex and Van) … in the evening we will Uber up to LAX to get our 15 hour flight to Sydney!

I spent the day with Jeanne and she drew a picture of herself with grandpa … grok brought it to life!

Food in Mazatlan

Food has always been one of the biggest draws of travel for us — the hope that unexpected flavors will delight the palate, trigger a dopamine rush, and bring a pure sense of joy. Unfortunately, the food in Mazatlán left us rather disappointed. In three words: monotonous, dry, and bland.

Fourth Week in Mazatlán

April 7–12, 2025 — Work Trip to Mazatlán, Week 4

This was a calm and uneventful week — our final one in Mazatlán. For the first time during our travels, we actually felt genuinely happy about the idea of going home. For some reason, many frigatebirds suddenly chose to circle above our apartment building this week, bringing back the joy of early-morning birdwatching.

Third Week in Mazatlán

March 31 to April 6, 2025|Third Week of the Work Trip in Mazatlán

One morning, we woke up to find that almost all the birds had vanished. They didn’t return the entire week. The joy of sipping tea on the balcony each morning while watching them dive into the sea and stir up splashes in search of fish seemed to have disappeared along with them.

March 24–30, 2025 — Week 2 of the Mazatlán Work Trip

The work week has settled into a steady rhythm, with nothing particularly dramatic. During video meetings with colleagues, I shared the ocean view in front of me.
