The Last day in Chiang Mai

Wednesday, the 25th day of our Down Under to Eastern Delight trip

It was another easygoing day in Chiang Mai, and our last one here. We spent the morning relaxing at the hotel, then for lunch, walked to a very down-to-earth little eatery called Mee Gin. I had found it on Google Maps, close to the hotel, well-reviewed for tasty food, but with repeated complaints that the place was full of pigeons flying around!! We decided to check it out first and run away immediately if we saw any birds inside!

When we arrived, not a single pigeon was in sight, so we sat down and ordered. The entire place was completely run by one woman—she cooked, served, and handled phone orders all by herself, constantly moving from one task to another. The whole restaurant felt like her own small universe.

Right after we ordered and were waiting for our dishes, a pigeon suddenly glided in, flew across the room, and perched on a beam nearby overhead. A customer shooed it away, and thankfully it didn’t return. Disaster averted.

As for the food, it was tasty and inexpensive. All three dishes together cost just 140 baht ($4.50).

Although no signs requested it, customers clear their own tables.
A green papaya tree.

After lunch, we visited a distinctive silver temple just outside the Old City. Compared with the many golden temples in Chiang Mai, this one stood out with its cool, metallic shine under the sunlight. It was originally built in the 16th century and has been expanded over time. Most of the silver decorations you see today were created by modern artists using traditional silver-crafting techniques, intricate and striking in their detail.

Next to the temple, there was a place where people can create their own hand-crafted silver jewelry.

Back in the Old City, we stopped by a clothing shop called Born 2 Collection. The staff told us that all the pieces were personally designed and handmade by the owner, many featuring adorable cat motifs with a distinctive, whimsical style. I couldn’t resist getting one. It wasn’t cheap at 3,750 baht ($116.00), but it was truly special.

For dinner, we went to a Thai restaurant PJG found called Lemongrass. Their deep-fried fish with garlic and chili absolutely wowed us—the crispy little garlic cloves combined with the Thai chili flavor made it the standout dish of the Chiang Mai trip!

Today is our last day in Chiang Mai — tomorrow we head to Bangkok. Our first time back since 2019!

  1. I’m glad you finally found a cheap and good food restaurant that almost had no pigeons.
I liked the silver temple, perhaps more than the gold because it is so different.

What a wonderful cat shirt. It will look very nice on you! You can model it on a Saturday call!
Another great meal! Today you had a good food day. Too bad you aren’t staying longer now you know where to go to eat.
Little bear should have tried silver but I guess he wanted to be twins with his new friend gold mouse.
