Saturday, May 23, 2026 — Day 2 of Our Northern Italy Trip
Today was our only full day in Milan. As the transportation and business hub of northern Italy, Milan is often treated as just a “transit city,” but we felt it might be underrated. At least from the moment we watched the crowds flowing through the canal district last night, we could already sense the city’s unique atmosphere – lively, relaxed, and carrying a touch of old European romance, exactly the kind of feeling we both enjoy.
Our main plan for today was the Milan Duomo. Before leaving home, we had purchased 9:00 AM tickets online. The €26 combined ticket included elevator access. From our Airbnb, it took about 25 minutes by metro to reach the cathedral.

Milan’s metro system.
Construction of Milan’s Duomo began in 1386, when the Duke of Milan wanted to build a cathedral that would represent the city’s glory and wealth. Large amounts of white marble from the mountains of northern Italy were used during construction, and architects from France, Germany, and other regions also participated in the design, giving the cathedral a strong Gothic character. Most remarkable of all, the cathedral took nearly five hundred years to complete.

The tickets we bought allowed us to take the elevator directly to the rooftop without having to climb more than 250 steps. Even though it was not yet 9 AM, there was already a line at the entrance.

The most striking feature of the cathedral’s exterior is its spires — there are around 135 of them — which are also one of the most important elements giving the cathedral its Gothic style. After taking the elevator to the rooftop, we were able to see the spires up close. Nearly every one is topped with statues of saints, angels, or figures from biblical stories. These sculptures are not just decorative; they also make the entire building feel as if it is constantly being watched over and protected.

The Duomo contains more than 3,000 statues, making it one of the most heavily decorated churches in the world. From the exterior walls to the rooftop and interior, figures and intricate details can be seen everywhere, including religious figures, historical characters, and even gargoyle decorations.

Standing on the rooftop of the cathedral and looking out over Milan, walking among stone carvings that have survived for centuries, every step came with a powerful sense of unreality. The statues of saints and mythical creatures that had seemed impossibly distant from the ground were now only a breath away. In that moment, the noise and movement of the modern city felt muted, and we became like travelers in time, briefly yet truly stepping into a medieval dream built from marble and faith.

After finishing our visit on the rooftop, we entered the interior of the cathedral. Because I was wearing a sleeveless top, I was not allowed inside, so reluctantly I spent three euros at a vending machine to buy a simple shawl that seemed to be made of some kind of adhesive paper material. The cathedral probably earns quite a bit of money each year selling them.
Compared with the cathedral’s elaborate and ornate exterior, the interior feels more restrained and simple, similar to many churches we have seen in other European cities. The overall structure is classic Gothic style, with soaring vaulted ceilings and massive stone columns stretching upward, making the space feel vast and open. Sunlight filtered through the stained glass windows, casting soft patterns of light across the stone walls and floor, giving the entire space a quiet and solemn atmosphere.

Just around the corner from the cathedral is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and it was absolutely packed with people. This 19th-century building has an incredible sense of space. Two grand glass-and-iron vaulted passageways intersect beneath a central octagonal hall, while sunlight pours through the enormous glass dome above, filling the entire arcade with a bright and elegant glow. Luxury flagship stores line the walkways, alongside refined cafés and restaurants carrying the aroma of fresh coffee. Milan’s blend of vintage charm and modern fashion seemed almost swallowed by the endless crowds.

Leaving the arcade, we walked beneath the blazing sun past Sforza Castle and through Parco Sempione until the Arco della Pace suddenly appeared before us. Milan had entered full heatwave mode these past few days. After wandering around for a while in the rolling waves of heat, we felt almost melted by the sun.
In a small shop in the nearby Chinatown district, we bought a local TIM Sim card – 25 euros for 200GB of data. Afterward, we walked back near the Arch of Peace, found a shady spot, and had a simple lunch. Then we hopped onto one of Milan’s vintage trams and slowly rattled our way back to the Airbnb through the sweltering 2 PM heat.

Back at the Airbnb, we ended up taking an afternoon nap — in the end, we still could not fully resist the heavy pull of jet lag. Around five o’clock, we dragged our extremely unwilling bodies downstairs. But once two ice-cold beers went down, the chill instantly jolted our foggy minds awake.
By then, the evening sun was spreading across the entire canal, the water shimmering with reflected light. Energetic electronic music drifted out from the bars, its steady beat thumping in our ears, while we sat watching the endless flow of people passing by. The feeling of being on vacation was simply wonderful.

For dinner, we found a perfect spot right by the canal. To our surprise, the restaurant’s presentation had a very Michelin-style feel – huge plates with portions so delicately arranged they almost looked too refined to eat. But the food was genuinely excellent, and every dish felt unique and thoughtfully prepared.
And just like that, our day in Milan came to an end. Tomorrow, we will board a train and head to Lake Como.

Tradition says you get good luck from the bull but make take is that you get better luck from avoiding the bull, like you did.
It seems weird that woman’s shoulders are not allowed to be seen but elbows of men are ok.
Milan’s Duomo is beautiful, wonderful sight to see.
Finding a shady spot at the Arch of Peace seemed a welcome relief from the heat. I liked your description of the evening and especially liked the “feeling of being on vacation was simply wonderful.”
