Going to Milan

Thursday, May 21, 2026 — Day 1 of Our 2026 Northern Italy Trip

Our feet were getting itchy again – the Northern Italy trip we had started planning two months ago officially began today. We arrived at SFO a little after 2 pm and spent a few hours in the Iberia lounge, working intensely from the airport, while enjoying the complimentary food and drinks.

Although the flight was delayed by an hour, we still arrived in Madrid pretty much on time. The EU immigration process at Madrid Airport was surprisingly simple. There were both self-service kiosks and staffed counters, with almost no lines, and we cleared immigration within just a few minutes.

Afterward, we relaxed for a few hours in the Iberia lounge at Madrid Airport before boarding our flight to Milan, Italy. The two hour flight went smoothly, and a little after 7 p.m., we finally arrived at the first stop of our trip: Milan.

After arriving, we decided to take a taxi directly from the airport to our Airbnb. While researching the trip beforehand, many travelers had said that taxis in Italy are more convenient than using Uber, and after experiencing it ourselves, that definitely seemed true. There are dedicated lanes for taxis and buses here, sometimes even shared with trams. While other cars sat stuck in traffic, our taxi sped past along the side the entire way, which felt especially satisfying.

Very unique! The bus/tram lane is shared by the taxis!

Our Airbnb was located in the famous Navigli district, along a riverside street beside the Grand Canal. Once an important trade waterway in Milan, the area has now become one of the city’s liveliest and most atmospheric neighborhoods. The canal is lined with restaurants, bars, and outdoor seating everywhere.

At 8:30 that evening, we finally checked into our Airbnb. After quickly dropping off our luggage, we headed downstairs right away and found a restaurant by the canal. With the evening breeze drifting through and an ice-cold beer in hand, we settled into our long-delayed dinner while watching the crowds flow past before us.

Even after midnight, the streets were still brightly lit and packed with people. The entire Navigli district felt like a summer night gathering that would never end. We found our spot by the canal and finished up the night with a delicious bottle of montepulchiano wine.

It was another long traveling day, but once we arrived we were once again happy to be exploring the world again this time looking forward to exploring northern Italy!

And so, just like that, after eight years, we finally returned to Italy!

  1. I’m glad everything went smoothly for your trip into Milan. It was good to find out taxis can go in the bus lanes before you took an uber!
    Have a relaxing trip.
