Books, Lunch, the Skydeck and Rain

Monday, The 9th day of our Down Under to Eastern Delight trip

At 7:30 in the morning, Lune Croissanterie opened right on time. This bakery, long praised by countless YouTubers, is something of an online sensation. I thought arriving early would mean fewer people, but to my surprise, a long line had already formed outside when I arrived.

Fortunately, the wait was worth it — I bought three kinds of croissants, each bite flaky and rich in buttery flavor, truly living up to its reputation.

In the morning, we visited the State Library of Victoria, built in 1854. With its neoclassical architectural style, it is one of Melbourne’s oldest public cultural buildings. The library is open to the public free of charge and attracts countless visitors every year.

The most famous part of the library is the La Trobe Reading Room, also known as The Dome, the library’s most iconic space. The name “La Trobe” comes from Charles La Trobe, the first Governor of Victoria and a key figure in promoting cultural and educational development in early Australia.

The hall is a vast octagonal space, with soft natural light streaming down through the skylight in the dome. In the center, rows of old wooden desks radiate outward like rays of light. Each desk is fitted with a green glass lamp that gently illuminates the reader’s space. There weren’t many people reading there today—mostly tourists—but the atmosphere remained calm and dignified, so quiet that even footsteps seemed hesitant to disturb the weight of history.

For lunch, we met at noon with a “mystery guest.” Why mysterious? Because he shares with PJG a family connection that stretches across generations and thousands of miles. PJG’s great-grandfather — the one who lived in China for 18 years — was this man’s great-great-grandfather. A bit confusing, isn’t it?

The connection came to light through PJG’s long dedication to family genealogy research. Over twenty years ago, that same research led him to contact this man’s sister in New Zealand — whom we plan to visit soon. It was she who suggested we meet her brother in Melbourne — and that’s how today’s lunch came about.

Tazio – The Italian restaurant, Tazio, tucked away in a narrow laneway.

The restaurant he suggested was an Italian place. We arrived a few minutes early, giving us time to guess what kind of person we were about to meet. Then a large, heavyset man in a faded T-shirt approached, his friendly smile instantly putting us at ease. It was him.

Our first impression was unexpected — he looked a bit unkempt, like someone between jobs. But once we started talking, his story proved far more fascinating than his appearance suggested. His name was Grahame Grieve, an expert in medical informatics and the key creator of FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources), the global standard that enables hospitals and tech companies worldwide to share and integrate health data seamlessly.

He collaborates with public health groups in multiple countries and has particularly close ties with the White House. According to him, he has been to the West Wing and has met with HHS representatives under four successive U.S. administrations. In fact, his project is directly funded by the U.S. government.

There are many of his public lectures and talks available online.

After lunch, we said goodbye to Grahame and went to Melbourne’s Eureka Skydeck. The elevator shot up to the 88th floor in seconds, and you could feel the change in air pressure as we ascended. Standing by the glass windows, the whole of Melbourne stretched out below— the Yarra River winding through the city and trams gliding along the streets. Unfortunately, the glass reflections were quite strong, making it hard to take photos without catching the silhouettes of visitors.

In the evening, we found a small Chinese dumpling restaurant and ordered a few plates of steaming hot dumplings—simple yet satisfying. As dusk fell, the sky darkened and rain suddenly poured down again, so we decided to stay in, cozying up in our apartment and ending the day to the sound of rain.

In Australia, when Burger King wanted to open their first store, they found that the name Burger King was already trademarked! So they went with Hungry Jacks 😂😂 在澳大利亚,当年汉堡王(Burger King)想开设第一家分店时,发现“Burger King”这个名字早已被注册了商标!

and … the bear gets abducted by the bees !!

  1. The statues in beginning, I thought they were store mannequins!

    Your pastries looked delicious.

Is Grahame Grieve much younger than James? Because J’s great grandfather was his great great.

I hope little bear made fast friends with the bees so he wouldn’t get stung !
