A Rainy Day

Saturday

It was still raining outside when we woke up this morning and the forecast said it would rain all day. I sipped my tea while glancing through over thirty emails in my work inbox and ended up replying to three of them. I am supposed to be on vacation!

Despite the wind, the chill, and the off-and-on rain, we decided to head out anyway. To take it easy, we started the day with a ride around the city on the free tram.

Melbourne’s “Free Tram Zone” in the city center is such a convenient feature – any tram ride within this area is completely free. In fact, Melbourne has the largest tram system in the world! We got off at Victoria Harbour and the Queen Victoria Market, taking a brief stroll around. The cold, rainy weather dampened our enthusiasm for exploring, but it did lend a certain lazy, unhurried charm to the day.

For lunch, we went to a Vietnamese pho restaurant. The reason was simple – the sign in the window said, “President Bill Clinton had two bowls…” In fact, he never actually visited this place. However, there were pictures of Jackie Chan and other famous Hong Kong movie stars on the walls. Still, the pho was excellent—18 Australian dollars a bowl, generous in portion, rich in broth, and the beef was tender. Much better value than in the U.S.

In the afternoon, someone went back to the apartment to rest, while I stopped by the Gorman store and bought a wool vest—perfect for this damp, chilly weather. Later, we went to a small soufflé café and shared a soft, sweet soufflé. After that, we visited a chocolate shop called Koko Black in the Royal Arcade, where we enjoyed a cup of coffee and some hot chocolate.

In the evening, we had dinner at a Japanese tapas restaurant called Izakaya Domo, tucked away in a laneway named Postal Lane. The alley was brightly lit and bustling with voices—the city seemed to have come back to life on this rainy evening.

The forecast for the next few days all shows rain—it seems we’ve run into a bit of bad luck. One interesting detail caught my eye: the forecast included a “Sheep Grazier Warning,” something I’d never seen before. And so, our second day in Melbourne came to an end—amid wind and rain, the warmth of hot chocolate, and the lively hum of the city’s laneways.

At the Mitre Tavern we chatted briefly with a few Melbourne locals who told us that rain and unpredictable weather is a feature of Melbourne!

The Mitre Tavern, an English-style pub that has been in operation since 1868—said to be the oldest pub in Melbourne.

And now the much anticipated bear video …

  2. The Birds eating at the table sculpture was very creative and I also see James in the background.

I’m glad you went back to a Gorman store to buy a warm (and pretty ? ) vest. I need a photo!

James looks like he is enjoying his coffee at Koko.

A “Sheep grazier warning” is what exactly?

I love how little bear is sharing his hot tea with his new friends! I didn’t notice those friends with the black birds the first time I saw the sculpture.
