Heading to Florence

June 1, 2026, Monday — Day 11 of Our Northern Italy Trip

Today was another travel day, moving from one city to another, with three train rides needed to reach Florence.

In the morning, we left our apartment in Manarola and dragged our luggage downhill and down countless steps. This time, though, it felt much easier – at least we didn’t have to climb up anymore.

We arrived at the station and boarded the first train at 9:28 a.m. for La Spezia. As the main transportation hub near Cinque Terre, it was only a little over ten minutes away. From there, we transferred to the 10:17 train to Pisa. What should have been a journey of less than an hour ended up being delayed, and we did not arrive in Pisa until 11:20.

As soon as we got off the train, we hurried across the platforms with our luggage in search of the next train to Florence. Fortunately, just as we reached the platform, the 11:30 train slowly pulled into the station. We made the connection without any real trouble, and our journey continued smoothly.

Shortly after noon, we arrived in Florence. After leaving the station, we took a taxi to our apartment. Since it was still too early to check in, we found a nearby restaurant for lunch.

We ordered two pasta dishes, both of which were quite good. It was a welcome meal and a much-needed boost of energy after the morning’s journey.

Just look at how tall the doorway of this restaurant is.

This apartment is undoubtedly one of the biggest surprises of our trip to Italy. It is located inside a historic building along the Arno River, a residence originally built in 1406 for the banker and politician Niccolò da Uzzano.

When I get home, I will definitely make an entire video dedicated to this apartment.

Our apartment is a three-level loft, and the entire rooftop terrace belongs to us. From the top, we have a 360-degree view of Florence’s skyline.

The dome of Florence Cathedral is clearly visible across the river, and the Old Ponte Vecchio Bridge stretches gracefully over the Arno River below. The first time we stepped onto the rooftop, both of us couldn’t help but admire the view – it was even more beautiful than we had imagined.

In the early evening, we took a ten-minute walk to Piazza Santo Spirito. We found a seat along the edge of the square and enjoyed a couple of cold beers, a perfect way to recover from the day’s travel.

Tourists and locals drifted through the square, and the air was filled with the relaxed atmosphere that seems so characteristic of Florence.

For dinner, we chose a Tuscan restaurant right next to Piazza Santo Spirito. Although we had not made a reservation, we were fortunate enough to get an outdoor table.

The warm evening breeze, the delicious meal, and the atmosphere of Florence’s historic center at dusk made the fatigue of travel gradually fade away.

After returning to the apartment, we couldn’t resist climbing up to the rooftop once again.

As night fell, the lights of Florence gradually came alive. The historic buildings along both sides of the Arno River were reflected in the calm water below. A gentle breeze drifted through the air, and the entire city seemed to slow down.

The view was simply mesmerizing. We sat there for a long time, taking it all in, almost reluctant to go to bed.
