Going Home

Saturday, the 35th and last day of our Down Under to Eastern Delight trip

Today we’re heading home. From the earliest planning stages, from counting down the days with excitement, to now—when the trip is quietly coming to an end—it feels like time has flown by in the blink of an eye.

The driver we had arranged came at 8:30 in the morning, the same friendly man who had taken us from the airport to the hotel. The fare was 1,200 NT, surprisingly cheaper than Uber. The ten-hour flight was smooth and uneventful. The moment the plane touched down in San Francisco, that familiar cold wind brushed across my face—it really did feel we were home.

We also picked up a fun expression from Jackie: “itchy feet,” meaning your feet start to itch because you want to move, to set off, to go out and see the world. It seems like the two of us with our forever-itchy feet should probably take a break for now, but I suspect it won’t be long before our feet start itching again.

After weeks of moving through cities, night markets, mountains, ferries, airports, and the small surprises that stitched each day together, this journey comes to an easy, quiet close. The meals we tasted, the people we met, the familiar and unfamiliar streets we walked, and the moments of rest in between have all settled into memory. We’re home now—feet a little tired, hearts a little fuller—already knowing that once we’ve unpacked and caught our breath, those same “itchy feet” will start acting up again, nudging us toward the next place on the map.
