The Last Day in Queenstown

Tuesday, the 17th day of our Down Under to Eastern Delight trip

This morning it started raining in Queenstown. The weather here is always unpredictable, so since we couldn’t easily go out, I went online to take care of some work. I spent over an hour on a call with a colleague and helped him sort out his recent issues. When I finished, the rain outside stopped and we decided to drive out of Queenstown in a little loop.

Our first stop was Coronet Peak. It’s a ski field in winter, though it isn’t open now, but the view from the top is incredibly wide — layers of mountains, drifting clouds, and a stretch of green valley at the base. In the two days of driving, we noticed quite a bit of roadkill along the road — much more than normal — a reminder of how much wildlife moves through these areas. After that, we went to Lake Hayes. The lake was very calm after the rain, and looking at it felt especially soothing.

Then we had a simple lunch near a residential area that’s currently under development, and just as we finished eating, the rain started again. After that, we drove back to the hotel, stopped by the supermarket to buy some snacks, and returned to the room to pack our bags in preparation for tomorrow’s Doubtful Sound cruise.

Dinner was at a Vietnamese restaurant on the water front in town. The dishes were simple, but overall were excellent.

- After the rain, the clouds were thick, and sunlight slipped through the gaps, falling onto the mountains in distinct patches. The bright and dark areas were sharply divided, creating a very striking scene.

Prawns, Chili Chicken, Pork Belly

After dinner, on our walk back to the hotel, a street performer was putting on a show by the lake.

Our three-day stay in Queenstown was short, but more than enough to leave a deep impression. The beauty here is a kind of pure, overwhelming power—mountains, lakes, forests. Driving along winding mountain roads, watching snow-covered peaks reflected on the lake, and finding ourselves surrounded by vast landscapes—those moments made us hold our breath without even realizing it.

Queenstown’s charm lies entirely in its nature. It doesn’t need many words, yet it stays with you for a long, long time.

This is the statue of William Gilbert Rees, the founder of Queenstown, and according to Bear’s version of history, he lost far more than just a place in the town’s story — Bear took away his sheep.

  1. The scenery is again delightful. I would like to visit there.

I love the video of little bear leaving with Mr Rees’ sheep and wandering off on it.

So you are going on a cruise. Is it on the Doubtful Sound or a suspected Fjord cruise? Both descriptions leave me wondering.
