Going to Queenstown

Sunday, The 15th day of our Down Under to Eastern Delight trip

Our flight from Auckland to Queenstown departed around ten in the morning and arrived around noon. Just before landing, endless mountain peaks came into view through the window—majestic and awe-inspiring, as if we had entered the world of a picture postcard.

After picking up our rental car, we drove for about 15 minutes to the hotel, where a breathtaking mountain range stood right outside the entrance, so close it felt within reach.

After checking in and settling down, we walked into town for a late lunch of Japanese ramen—simple yet satisfying. Then we strolled along the shore of Lake Wakatipu, the third-largest lake in New Zealand and Queenstown’s most enchanting natural landmark. Shaped like a lightning bolt, the lake stretches about 50 miles (80 km), its crystal-clear blue waters fed by glacial melt. Surrounded by the towering Southern Alps, their snow-capped peaks complete a breathtaking natural panorama.

Two bowls of hot Ramen to start our journey in Queenstown!

After lunch, we took the Skyline gondola up to the top of the mountain called, Bob’s Peak. The cable car climbs at a steep angle—though the ride is short, the scenery along the way is stunning. From the summit, you get a sweeping view of Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu, and the surrounding snow-capped mountains. At the top, there are luge rides, a restaurant, and walking trails, making it a popular spot for both sightseeing and relaxation. Tickets cost 66 NZD per person, and the place was bustling with visitors. Standing on the viewing platform, we looked down over Queenstown—the deep blue lake lay quietly below, encircled by layers of mountains, their snowy peaks glistening in the sunlight, a sight so beautiful it left us speechless.

We had our most enjoyable dinner so far on this trip, by the lakeside, watching the sunset as we ate. The evening glow spilled over the snowy peaks, turning them from white to amber. We also noticed that the snow on the mountaintops was melting—visibly less than when we had first arrived. Queenstown was just as I had imagined—only more beautiful, more breathtaking. Every moment here feels like a living landscape.

From the top left, the dishes are: seared scallop, crispy cauliflower, green lipped mussels, spinach salad, steamed sole, and lamb rump.

- The mountains before us were gently lit by the fading glow of the setting sun, peaceful and beautiful.

As we finished dinner we stopped at a local pub where we listened to the live DJ mix and were warmed by the heater.

The Bear really didn’t like the music. –
