Harbor Walk and the Sky Deck

Thursday, The 12th day of our Down Under to Eastern Delight trip

In the morning, we woke to find a few rays of sunlight streaming through the window. We hadn’t managed to unpack our things yesterday, so the morning was spent tidying up.

The apartment was small, with little storage space, so we had to get creative—using the ironing board as a table to charge devices and the suitcase handles as clothes racks, improvising our own sense of order. By mid-morning, everything was finally in place.

We set out for a walk along the waterfront. Although the weather was still switching between sun and rain, the temperature was pleasant—neither cold nor hot—perfect for a stroll. There were noticeably fewer people in Auckland than in Australia, and life seemed to move at a slower pace. The people on the streets looked especially relaxed. Walking by the sea, with the breeze on our faces, it felt like the world quieted for a moment.

新西兰最富有的人James Packer的游船 – We came across the yacht of New Zealand’s richest man, James Packer

At noon, we had a casual, yet elegant, lunch at an Italian restaurant by the bay where we ordered New Zealand’s famous green mussels. The flavor was decent, though the texture was a bit tough—not quite as tender and delicious as we’d expected.

- Ten minutes ago, the sky was blue and clear; then in the blink of an eye, dark clouds gathered and the light changed completely.

In the afternoon, we went up to the Sky Tower, built in 1997 and standing 328 meters tall. It’s Auckland’s landmark and now the second tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere. From the observation deck, the city unfolded beneath us—its harbor, streets, and drifting clouds merging into one vast, sweeping panorama.

In the evening, we returned to a restaurant by the bay to try a local specialty—the Whitebait Fritter. I’d checked several places on the map; the first one was full, so we finally found a spot at Giraffe. When the dish finally arrived, it wasn’t as impressive as I’d hoped—perhaps disappointment, too, is part of the journey.

As night deepened, the harbor lights shimmered on the calm bay, and the rain-washed streets glowed faintly. A cool breeze brushed against my face. Thus, our day in Auckland came to a gentle close in the quiet of the night.

  1. I liked the giant ornaments on the street.
The SkyTower looks like a smaller SpaceNeedle.
Little bear sure is brave taking that jump.
